May 26, 2017 - The BIG DIG - Revamping Downtown Windsor
Construction begins on Monday, May 29, 2017
To the Merchants and Property Owners of Downtown Windsor
The BIG Dig is set to begin. The Windsor Town Council appreciates that this work will cause some changes to shopping patterns and affect residents who live in our downtown. EVERY effort will be made to ensure that the construction goes quickly and smoothly with the least amount of disruption possible. Below is some information and the start of a communication plan to keep you informed.
Activities ramped up this week with the contractor, Mid Valley Construction (1997) Ltd., gaining access to buildings and checking connections to install a temporary water system during this project. Once the temporary water system is connected, contractor will begin excavations on the Water Street end of Gerrish and work toward Grey Street for the installation of new water and wastewater lines.
The BIG DIG is expected to take 12 weeks!
The Town will be promoting that Gerrish Street is OPEN for Business
and encourage people to shop local and support you, our local businesses.
There will be No Parking or unauthorised access on this section of Gerrish Street; however, there is parking at various locations close by. Please ask your staff to park in public parking areas to allow customers to park off Stannus and King Street. We appreciate that some merchants have private parking. Please monitor your parking lots and be a little flexible before ticketing or towing vehicles. We all need to work together to ensure our downtown businesses continue to thrive during the upcoming construction. A map of alternate parking areas will be finalized by Saturday.
Monday, May 29
Due to bad weather on Friday, May 26, the scheduled work on Turner Lane (beside Tatum’s Fashion and Bridal) will start on Monday, May 29.
What to expect with the Victoria Lane work: Merchants MAY experience a decrease in water pressure. Until the work begins, we will not know for sure if there will be any discoloration in water but the water is still safe to drink.
Tuesday, May 30
CONSTRUCTION DAY – Gerrish Street is closed to vehicle traffic except for deliveries and handicap parking. Construction will begin at Water Street and work up Gerrish to Gray Street.
Information and updates will be posted on the Town of Windsor’s website. A separate page has been added for up-to-date construction information. Just click the tab: Gerrish St. Project
We will not be posting information on any other website or Facebook page and will not be responding to any comments posted anywhere else.
How can we Help?
Have a question/concern call 902-798-6679. Your call will be answered and directed to the best person to answer your inquiry. We will do our best to provide a quick answer. Please be patient.
There will be flaggers at Gerrish & Water, and Gerrish & Gray. If your business is getting a delivery...the driver may have to wait a few minutes, but the Contractor will arrange delivery access during the BIG Dig.
Should a customer drive up displaying a handicap parking sign, access will be arranged...again it may take a few minutes to clear the road to provide safe access. The flaggers will assess each situation and MAY provide alternative options like directing vehicles to the handicap parking in Victory Credit Union if the customer is going to be on the street for awhile.
Please ensure that your garbage is out at its regular time (7:30 am). Our haulers will continue to provide UNINTERRUPTED service during the BIG Dig
There are no power interruptions expected in the near future. Customers will be notified of scheduled power interruptions
Please be patient…we are all in this together.
May 19, 2017 - The water main from Gray St to Water St is going to be shut down at 1pm today (May 19), for an hour or less. This needs to be done in order to confirm which buildings or part buildings have water services off of that section of the water main. This will ensure everyone who needs to be connected to temporary water is connected.
David Ryerson from Mid-Valley is notifying everyone on the street.
May 15, 2017 - The Town of Windsor would like to advise the businesses, residents, shoppers and travelling public that the Gerrish Street Reconstruction Project from Water Street to Grey Street has begun.
DURING CONSTRUCTION, ALL BUSINESSES WILL REMAIN OPEN. PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THEM AND YOUR COMMUNITY.
You will notice activities starting to ramp up during the next few weeks. Contractors will begin by installing a temporary water system to provide water during the duration of the project. In order for this system to be connected, workers will need to gain access to premises'. This along with pre-inspection activities are meant to expedite the construction process allowing a tight work schedule to be executed. The project is expected to take 12 weeks. After the temporary water system is connected, contractors will begin excavations on the Water Street end of Gerrish and work toward Grey St for the installation of new water and wastewater lines.
Construction will create road closures from Grey St to Water St; however, pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project and we encourage everyone to continue to support our local businesses and shop locally, especially during this construction project, to lessen the burden on the shops in this area. Parking on this section will also be restricted; however, there is parking at various locations close by. Maps will be available within the next week.
The Town of Windsor apologizes for the inconvenience this may cause; however, we are asking for everyone's cooporation and patience as we work to replace the critical underground water and sewer infrastructure along with reconstructing the street and sidewalks along this section of Gerrish Street.
As well, a new "page" titled "Gerrish St Proj" will be available on our website by May 31st (visible from our homepage). It is there that you will continue to find communication updates on the project. As well, there will mentions on our Facebook & Twitter pages, but both will lead back to that particular website page as well.
